Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi (M.Sc. NET/JRF, Ph.D.) did his schooling from Islamia Public School and Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Leh. He did his graduation from GGM Science College (Jammu) and pursued his Post Graduation followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Jammu on the topic Seabuckthorn diversity, Plant Pathology, Cytogenetics and plant Reproductive Biology. 

He was first posted in EJM College (Leh) in 2008. After almost two years, he was transferred to GDC-Kargil where he served upto 2019. Subsequently, he was assigned the charge of Principal, GDC-Drass in October, 2019 and is striving to transform the newly established college into a model college. 

Dr. Abbasi is a recipient of the UGC Fellowship (jointly conferred by CSIR-UGC in 2005) and the UGC Teacher Fellowship in 2012. He received the Best Paper Presentation Award in the      5th Jammu & Kashmir State Science Congress from Mr. N.N. Vohra, Governor of J&K. He is also a recipient of the J&K State Award “Innovative Science Teacher Award”. Currently, he is the Advisor of International Association of Ladakh Studies (IALS) as well as a Member of the International Seabuckthorn Association.



Dear Students!

It is with great pleasure, that I welcome you all to University of Ladakh. University of Ladakh is indeed the highest seat of learning in trans-Himalayan region of India. The University was established through “The University of Ladakh Act, 2018” on December 16, 2018 by the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir Government. Being at the stage of inception, the University has embarked on the difficult yet exciting journey towards academic recognition, reputation and legacy in the world of knowledge production. I am confident that you (my dear students) through your rigour and hard work would not just fulfil your dreams and ambitions but also contribute in the larger pursuit of the University—to emerge as a great Centre of academic learning. 

The University of Ladakh encompasses six constituent colleges and two satellite campuses across Ladakh region. The university basically caters to the needs of students of Ladakh region—spread over a vast area of fifty thousand square kilometers. Besides focusing on students of Ladakh region, the University also intends to be an academic destination for students from other parts of India and Globe. The University of Ladakh aspire to be one of the leading universities of the country offering high quality, innovative and responsive education at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Ph.D. levels.

At Present, the University is offering more than 25 Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. Further, the University is in process of planning and designing courses and research programmes in subjects of importance—environmentally and economically and disciplinary areas immediate relevance to Himalayan, trans-Himalayan and, South and Central Asian regions. 

The students enrolled for various PG programmes this year, are also the very first batch for Postgraduate courses of the University.  I am therefore extremely delighted to welcome you all. As you embark on your academic pursuit in this University, I would like to remind you the history of solidarity, respect and communal harmony of Ladakh region along with the enormous hardship the region has withstood over the ages. You must imbibe these values and find inspiration from history of the region to make your stay in the campus more meaningful, harmonious and joyous. 

University of Ladakh stands for the dignity of all and respect for their ideals and beliefs. We expect that students should show consideration and respect for their teachers and non teaching faculties of the campuses. At the same time, I wishes you all my best wishes to utilize the time judiciously, efficiently and to make the best use of the opportunities to become successful individual and above all a great human.

The University believes that a safe, secure and conducive learning environment is the foremost precondition to quality education and Research which can be achieved by followings certain guidelines:

  • Discipline: The University intends to become one of the leading universities of the country. In order to achieve this goal, we expect the students to be well mannered, disciplined and focused. The University believes in freedom of speech and expression. However, nuisance, vulgarity, hatred, communal expressions shall not be tolerated and will attract strict actions. 

  • Ragging free campus: Any type of ragging is completely prohibited and banned and anyone found guilty will be punished appropriately. 

  • Sexual Harassment: The University follows the policy of zero tolerance towards sexual harassment. Any offence in this regard shall be dealt very strictly.

  • University property: University aspires to become “second home for the students” and the property within the campuses or colleges are for the use of students. However, this property should be preserved and be cared so as to forward it safely to the next batches. 

  • Hostel staying: Strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of Hostel and obey the Provost who is your guardian and is there for you.

  • To create a congenial living environment in the campuses of the University including the hostels for the students;

  • To monitor day-to-day essential support required for academic and co-curricular activities of students;

  • To arrange for special care of the weaker and needy sections of students;

  • To prepare plan and execute programmes for holistic development of students;

  • To nominate student representatives to various bodies of the University in consultation with elected student bodies of both campuses;

  • To enable students to participate effectively In the management of hostels and also to organize student-related activities;

  • To advise the Student Councils of the campuses as and when required;

  • To work with the Assistant Director of Sports, Hostel Wardens, Sports Officer, Cultural Officer, etc. for all matters related to student welfare;

  • To arrange to depute students to participate In events/programmes outside the University;

  • To keep in touch with guardians/parents of students as and when required;

  • To arrange for maintenance of students' discipline in the University; and

  • To take up any related task assigned by the University from time to-time.
